Upgrading Access Engine

NLINK requires the Microsoft Access Engine to be present for various components to function. NLINK 7.x or later will install the Microsoft Access Database 2010 Engine. If a newer version of Microsoft Engine is required, it can be installed manually by following these steps.

Please note that these are guidelines only, in some rare cases Microsoft Access Engine 2016 redistributable can cause issue(s) with Microsoft Office 365 applications. Please test upgrade on a QA machine before changing any production system.

 

  1. Uninstall the Microsoft Access drivers (2010 or 2016)

  2. Reboot

  3. Run check windows updates. If any updates are pending run them

  4. Get MS Access 2016 redistributable from Microsoft download site https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=54920 when you select download you get options


  5. Download “accessdatabaseengine_X64.exe” and install it.

  6. The version of 2016 that shows up based on above download (and works with NLINK) is MS Access Engine 16.0.5044.1000


  7. Above drivers work with NLINK on both Windows 2019 and Windows 2022


Known Issue

  • In cases NLINK GUI’s NCM or NMM work fine but NLINK Server will fail to start with error
    ”Error opening the meta-database file "[Some Meta-database path]". The server cannot start.
    Error Code: (-2147467259, 0x80004005) Unspecified error
    (-2147467259).”

    This issue can occur if Microsoft Access 2010 drivers are uninstalled after Microsoft Access 2016 drivers are installed. Repairing or reinstalling Microsoft Access 2016 drivers will fix the issue.

    • Goto “Add or Remove Programs”

    • Select Microsoft Access 2016 and choose “reinstall option”
